Getting the Latest JCL and JVCL

I went to install the latest JVCL today for Delphi 2009.  I was surprised that JEDI stopped offering one download with both the JCL and JVCL.  So I downloaded both, installing JCL first since it is required by JVCL.  Well, JVCL gave me an error that I had the wrong version of the JCL installed.

So I went back to Sourceforge to look if I grabbed the wrong one.  Sure enough, I had the September 9th version of each.  I tried again, and it still didn’t work.  So I figured I would get the latest from Subversion.  After I installed the subversion client I discovered links to download the latest versions via the subversion web interface as a tar.gz file (no need to connect via subversion.)  The links are not obvious, but really useful in my opinion, so I thought I would share them here:

[Check out the official daily link in the comments!]

One thing that is missing is the JVCL help, which you can download seperately (along with demos, etc.)

If you don’t have something that can open a tar.gz then get 7Zip.  It does a two step process (extract the tar from the gz, then extract the files from the tar), but it gets the job done.

Hope that helps.  Maybe I missed something and there is an easier way to get these packages. . . .

Delphi Makes #8 on TPCI

The November TPCI is in, and Delphi has in fact made #8.  C# also moved up to #7.  It was September when Delphi returned to the top 10In October it took 9th, bumping JavaScript, and this month it bumped Perl as it took 8th.  Delphi continues to climb at a faster rate then C#, and it is only 0.02% behind C#, so it could still overtake it.

Delphi is competing for TIOBE’s “Language of the Year 2008 Award” together with C++ and Python.

Actually, if it continutes its rate of climb since September it could overtake Python as well, which would certainly help cinch its standing as language of the year.  If I remember Python was last year, so I think it is Delphi’s turn.

So keep up the work of adding the phrase “Delphi Programming” to the text of all your pages about Delphi.  While there are other phrases that count towards Delphi, they only take the highest phrase, which is currently “Delphi Programming” so lets focus on that.

No Podcast Today

I had wanted to do something cool from PDC2008 for the podcast this week, but due to a series of events it just didn’t happen.  Hopefully I can get something put together for tomorrow.

What is Delphi Prism?

Sometimes being on-site slows you down. The WiFi is spotty and just finding a change to sit down is a challenge. The news about Delphi Prism is out. What is Delphi Prism? It is Delphi with full .NET 3.5+ support running in Visual Studio, with a number of the high power database solutions you would expect from CodeGear / Embarcadero.

Behind the scenes, this is accomplished with a stack of

You put all that together and you have a pretty exciting solution for .NET development.

Check out the impressive list of language features available in Delphi Prism, that are not available in C#.  We talked about a lot of these in Episode 5.  Notably:

Not to mention all the cool things you can do with the database tools.

I am sure there is much more to come about Delphi Prism.
